A lifetime in software engineering

Chris began programming at the age of 12, initially helping with software and technical work within his father’s electrical engineering company.

This early exposure to real operational systems sparked a long-term interest in building practical software that solves real business problems.

By 1998, Chris was already developing websites and early online systems during the formative years of the commercial web.

This hands-on experience through the early evolution of the internet laid the foundation for a career focused on building robust systems that operate in the real world.

Education and early career

Chris studied Computer Science at the University of Southampton, specialising in distributed systems and networked applications.

During this time he worked as a developer for the Southampton University Students’ Union, delivering web systems used by thousands of students.

After graduating, Chris joined Capgemini on their graduate technology programme, working on government systems including projects for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the HMRC Aspire programme, gaining security clearance and experience delivering enterprise-scale software.

Building platforms and consultancies

Chris later founded Buckle Consulting, a software consultancy that delivered over 250 bespoke web platforms and e-commerce systems over a 15-year period.

During this time he also co-founded Parcel Monkey, one of the UK’s early courier comparison platforms.

Chris designed and built the technical infrastructure powering the system, including automated carrier integrations with DHL, FedEx, CityLink and HDNL.

By 2010 the business had reached £2 million annual turnover, with thousands of shipments processed through the platform.

Logistics technology specialist

Over the past two decades Chris has delivered multiple logistics platforms including:

  • parcel comparison marketplaces
  • global luggage shipping systems
  • automated freight booking platforms
  • multi-carrier shipping portals
  • carrier API integrations across major networks

These systems support the full lifecycle of shipments from quote through to booking, labelling, tracking and operational reconciliation.

Chris continues to work closely with logistics businesses to modernise, stabilise and evolve the platforms they depend on.

Technical leadership

Alongside hands-on engineering, Chris has led development teams and technical delivery across multiple organisations.

Most recently he served as Lead Developer at Bluecrest Wellness, where he led a team responsible for a large bespoke healthcare technology platform.

Responsibilities included:

  • managing and mentoring engineering teams
  • evolving the Software Development Lifecycle under ISO27001
  • working directly with external auditors
  • supporting infrastructure modernisation and containerisation
  • driving engineering effectiveness through DORA metrics and team collaboration

Chris combines leadership experience with a continued passion for building software directly.

Engineering philosophy

Chris takes a pragmatic approach to engineering focused on delivering systems that work reliably in production.

His work emphasises:

  • clear architecture
  • operational stability
  • incremental improvement
  • maintainable systems that evolve over time

Many clients retain Chris as an ongoing technical partner responsible for maintaining and evolving critical platforms.

AI and the next generation of systems

Chris is increasingly involved in helping organisations adopt AI in practical ways, particularly around integration into existing systems and governance within regulated environments.

He is currently undertaking a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence (Digital Transformation) at the University of Southampton.

The programme focuses on applying AI technologies within real organisations, covering implementation strategy, ethics, governance and digital transformation.

Outside work

Chris lives in Hampshire on the south coast of the UK, working remotely with clients across the UK and internationally.

Outside engineering he enjoys spending time with family, travel and continuing to explore emerging technologies.
